The Ukrainian AS90 crews fire their 155mm guns all at the same time.
The second cohort of Ukrainian artillery recruits come to the end of their training on the formidable AS90 155mm self-propelled gun. The programme is part of the UKÕs enduring commitment to support Ukraine in its fight against RussiaÕs unprovoked invasion.
Over 1,000 UK service personnel are involved in implementing the programme, which is taking place at MOD sites across the North West, South West and South East of the UK. Training on the AS90 is happening at a specialist facility under the control of the Royal School of Artillery and is conducted by officers and soldiers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
Since the illegal invasion in February of 2022, the UK has committed to supporting Ukraine and is the second largest military to donate to Ukraine, with a commitment of £2.3 billion in 2022.
The UK is the first country to donate Western main battle tanks by gifting a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks with armoured recovery and repair vehicles, as well as a battery of eight AS90 guns at Òhigh readinessÓ and a further two batteries at Òvarying states of readiness.Ó The AS90 is an agile, highly accurate, modern artillery system which provides armoured protection to its crew whilst enabling them to strike targets at long ranges.
Ukrainian volunteer recruits have been given bespoke training in all aspects of operating and maintaining the AS90 system. The Ukrainian artillery soldiers have backgrounds ranging from experienced artillery soldiers to little or no military experience at all.
The UK has also gifted clothing and equipment to support Ukrainian soldiers in their training and deployment back to Ukraine. Each soldier will be issued with:
¥ Personal protective equipment including helmets, body armour, eye protectors, ear protectors, pelvic protection, and individual first aid kits
¥ Field uniforms and boots
¥ Cold and wet weather clothing
¥ Bergens, day sacks and webbing
¥ Additional equipment required for field conditions including ponchos, sleeping bags, and entrenching tools
The UK has a long history of supporting Ukrainian service personnel through Operation ORBITAL, which trained 22,000 Ukrainians between 2015 and 2022. The programme builds on this success and demonstrate the UKÕs continued leadership in responding to UkraineÕs military requirements as the war evolves.
